| Okay, short story long: After arriving back in St. John's, we headed back south two days later to take a boat tour chasing whales and puffins. After the tour, as we were packing up our bikes to start the 35km return ride to St. John's, we encountered Neil, who offered to take us and our bikes on his boat from Witless Bay to Bay Bulls, bypassing one of the most horrendous hills between where we were, and where we were going. Having already conquered said hill two days previously, we didn't feel the need to prove our worth climbing the ultra-steep 2 km-long almost-mountain again, so we hopped in the boat, and were treated to a lovely personal tour of the east Avalon coastline. Upon our arrival at the Bay Bulls dock (where Neil docks for a whopping $94/year - no, that's not a typo), we were informed that we should check out the church up the street. The gates were apparently built from the canons of a warship that had sunk in the bay in the 1800s. While we were taking a few pictures of the gates, a man driving by pulled over, and told us to go check out the statue under the trees, as it was supposed to be pretty weird, built by a priest for his brother that had died in the war. I think I have to agree, the statue's pretty weird. |
